I thought that the best thing – maybe the only good thing – about 2013 is that it is a prime number. But it’s not. There are three prime number factors of 2013: 3, 11, and 61. So, it didn’t even have that.
So many people, groups, organizations, and institutions have failed this year that it is difficult to find one that is held by Americans in anything other than what Winston Churchill called “minimum high regard.”
In a Gallup poll taken mid-year only three institutions – the military (76%), small business (65%), and the police (57%) – got marks higher than 50% on the question: How much confidence to you have in the following institutions? Continue reading

In the ’60s a battle cry of anti-war (and anti-Lyndon Johnson) college students was “Lead, follow or get out of the way;” a concept that morphed into lyrics for Bob Dylan’s anthem, “The Times They are a’Changin.”

The Chicago Sun-Times Lynn Sweet picked out an interesting morsel in Jodi Cantor’s book about the Obama family:
“When Michelle Obama worked in Mayor Daley’s City Hall in the early 1990s, she was “distressed” by how a small group of “white Irish Catholic” families — the Daleys, the Hynes and the Madigans — “locked up” power in Illinois.
She particularly resented the way power in Illinois was locked up generation after generation by a small group of families, all white Irish Catholic — the Daleys in Chicago, the Hynes and Madigans statewide.”
Obama White House Chief of Staff Bill Daley, one of those hated white Irish Catholics, resigned the same weekend that the book’s juiciest tidbits leaked out.
It is probably all just a coincidence, but sometimes coincidences reveal bigger truths.
And the bigger truth is that Bill Daley left the White House because he lost to Valerie Jarrett and to the President’s wife in the battle for the philosophical direction of the Obama White House. Continue reading

The political geniuses around President Barack Obama have a problem: they do not – DO NOT – want this election to be a referendum on the President.
And, for good reason. According to the three-day Gallup tracking poll, Obama’s job approval is back down to 41 percent. Two months ago his approval bottomed at 38 percent, but he has not been at 50 percent job approval since May.
Gallup goes on to compare Obama’s dismal performance rating with his predecessors. In December of their third year in office here’s where they were:
— Eisenhower (1955) 75%
— Nixon (1971) 50%
— Carter (1979) 53%
— Reagan (1983) 54%
— HW Bush (1991) 51%
— Clinton (1995) 51%
— W Bush (2003) 58%
No elected President in the past half-century has entered his re-election year underwater in approval. Let’s look at how the Obama campaign has chosen to shore up these numbers. Continue reading
