Saving Syria from Itself

BY MICHAEL S. JOHNSON

It is striking, the degree to which President Barack Obama can do the right thing so badly.

Look at the last ten days of Syrian decision-making. He made a decision to attack Syria, unilaterally, for using chemical weapons on its own people, without the public concurrence of the United Nations or many of our allies, both Middle Eastern and European, and without consulting Congress. He made the decision before United Nations’ weapons inspectors had even started their inspection of the site of the bombings in Damascus.

In the intervening week, however, the President has consulted with our allies. He delayed a military strike until after Congress debates and goes on record for or against authorizing military intervention for him, which now won’t occur until after the UN inspectors have had time to submit their findings. In 1605, Guy Fawkes and a group of disgruntled English Catholics hatched a plan to blow the British Parliament to smithereens by tunneling under the massive building, rolling in kegs of gunpowder and lighting the whole thing afire just as the House of Lords was entertaining King James the First.

Alas, the plan was discovered before the spark was lit, and Guy Fawkes and his merry band of terrorists were executed and the cause of freedom of worship for English Catholics was set back for hundreds of years.

Most terrorist bombing campaigns don’t work. But some do. Continue reading

Remembering September 11th

BY JOHN FEEHERY

Here is an essay about how my day went on September 11th.

It was a clear, crisp September morning, the kind of day that makes Washington a glorious place to live in the Fall. I woke up later than I wanted to, knowing that I had to take care of two things: The Speaker’s Daily news summary and my NFL football pool sheet.

We were a week past the August recess, and I still hadn’t gotten into the old work routine. In my mind, I will still on recess time. Usually I wanted to stop by Starbucks on my way to work, but I was running too late. Continue reading
