One of the very few things about being me is that I get calls from pretty smart reporters asking me what I think about this or that.
Sitting at the Atlanta airport yesterday afternoon, I got such a call from a reporter for the Daily Beast asking me to compare Sarah Palin’s appearances in the run-up to Tuesday’s elections with those of Mitt Romney.

If the polls are right–and they are remarkably consistent–Democrats will take a drubbing next week, likely losing control of the House and barely holding on to their majority in the Senate. It is possible that such a powerful repudiation will cause them to engage in some serious soul searching and consider whether they have taken the country in a direction the people (it’s their country, after all) don’t want to go.

Neoconservatives, Reaganites and other militarily assertive factions in the United States are sometimes accused of thinking it is always 1938 (Britain’s appeasement of Hitler at Munich) — that there is always a Hitler-like aggressor being appeased and about to drag the world into conflict. There is sometimes merit in that charge.
As, likewise, is there sometimes merit in the charge against isolations and other doves that they always see 1914 (start of WWI) or 1964 (beginning of escalation of troops in Vietnam) — the imminent and foolish entry into or escalation of a war that can’t be won — or even if victory were to be gained, it would be Pyrrhic.

The good news coming in over the weekend is that Glenn Beck announced that he wasn’t running for President. The bad news is that he seems to think of himself as some sort of a religious prophet, and a lot of people seem to agree with him.
Beck proved that he wasn’t completely delusional when he admitted that he would be unelectable should he decide that he was running for the nation’s highest office. On that, I assume he is correct, but then again, you never know.
