Less Is More

In spite of a lot of talk and promises, President Obama is one pick away from filling out his Cabinet-level team for his second term. The scorecard? According to the Washington Post’s Emily Heil and Al Kamen: The number of white men in Cabinet-level jobs increased from eight in the first round to likely 10 in this term and one fewer woman than there were in his first.

Moreover, according to the two writers, the President didn’t do very well in “maintaining diversity, and for those who expected more minorities – especially Latinos – not good at all.”

Assuming Charlotte Mayor Anthony Foxx is confirmed as Transportation Secretary, it “would bring the number of blacks to only three, down from four in the first term.” Continue reading

State of the State of the Union

From Paris, France

I am in Paris for one afternoon and overnight because the non-stop service from Oujda, Morocco to Dulles International Airport just outside Washington, DC hasn’t yet begun. We flew into Orly Airport which is the Newark Airport of Europe. If you can arrange a trip that doesn’t include Orly, I recommend you do that. But, any story that ends with, “and then we had dinner in Paris” is a pretty good story.

Washington, DC is awash in activity surrounding the President’s State of the Union address tomorrow night at nine Eastern time. Continue reading

Second Terms

Now that the biggest parlor game in the world “Who will be the next President” is over, the next parlor game that has us obsessing here in our nation’s capital is: Who is in and who is out in President Obama’s second-term Cabinet and senior White House staff?

Putting together the senior team for a second term is far different from the first term. Oh, there are professional members of the transition team who have served in previous Administrations, but the new boss is likely to be overwhelmed with the number of decisions that have to be made in the relatively few weeks between election day in early November and Inauguration Day on January 20.
