Obama in Ireland

It’s good that the President and the First Family traveled to Ireland, and all of these news reports that make a federal case out of the cost are missing the point.

It is safe to say that Mr. Obama would have never made it to the White House if it weren’t for two prominent Irish Americans.

Ted Kennedy gave the Illinois Senator the critical boost he needed when he endorsed him for President. And Richie Daley, the iconic Mayor of Chicago, gave the former community organizer the backing of his machine and its critical resources to help first get to the Senate and then make the leap to bigger things. The Irish British Handshake

It was the handshake heard around the world.

Martin McGuinness, the former commander of the IRA, and Queen Elizabeth II, the current Monarch of Great Britain – which at the moment includes Northern Ireland, shook hands in Belfast.

The IRA killed the Queen’s Cousin, Lord Mountbatten, it has duly noted, making this handshake theoretically difficult for Elizabeth. Of course, the Queen’s people have killed hundreds, if not thousands, of Marty’s colleagues, and hunted him down for a couple of decades.

McGuiness is now the Deputy First Minister of the Northern Irish local government.  He has responsibility to help run things, build roads, provide social services, tax and spend, and all of the other chores that come from running a government. Continue reading

March Deadline Bad and Bogus

Most people looked at the president’s March 18 healthcare deadline and saw a totally unrealistic, pie-in-the-sky, Hail Mary pass from a guy who has set down several totally unrealistic, pie-in-the-sky, Hail Mary pass deadlines in the past. 

Remember when he wanted a healthcare law on his desk last August? Or when he wanted it done before Thanksgiving? Or Christmas?
