May Flowers

BY JOHN FEEHERY
Reprinted from TheFeeheryTheory.com

April showers bring May flowers.

The Epigaea repens is a delicate flowering plant that was prevalent at Plymouth Rock, especially in the early 1600’s.   It was so prevalent that the 100 or so religious separatists who made Massachusetts home named it the Mayflower, after the ship that brought them to America.

Mayflower was not an uncommon name for a sailing vessel at the time. There had been a Mayflower to sailed against the Spanish Armada when the Catholic power tried to instill its will on a newly Protestant English Monarch.

Short History of Executive Orders

BY JOHN FEEHERY
Reprinted from TheFeeheryTheory.com

The President’s power to issue an executive order is not spelled out in the Constitution.

And for the first 75 years or so of our Republic, an executive order wasn’t even made public.  They were just directives sent from the White House to the various agencies, telling them what to do.

Portman Best VP Pick

BY JOHN FEEHERY
Reprinted from TheFeeheryTheory.com

John Nance Garner, the former Speaker of the House who would be promoted to become Franklin Roosevelt’s Vice President, called the higher job akin to a “warm bucket of spit.”

But that was Garner working with FDR.

A Vice President doesn’t have to just wait around for his boss to keel over. Some Vice Presidents actually do work.

Dick Cheney was an activist Vice President.  So was Al Gore, as was George H.W. Bush.  Joe Biden strives to be an activist, although he better serves as the Court Jester for Obamaworld.

Martin Killing Not Trivial Moment

BY JOHN FEEHERY
Reprinted from TheFeeheryTheory.com

The Trayvon Martin incident is no trivial moment in American history.

Mr. Martin was gunned down by George Zimmerman in a Sanford, Florida gated community.  Zimmerman says he was defending himself.  Civil rights leaders and the Martin family believe it was murder.

The Sanford Police Department doesn’t quite know what to believe, and so far, has refused to arrest Zimmerman.

Upon this one deadly confrontation, America’s racial past and future collapse.

Will we ever live in a post-racial society or must we continue to harbor resentments and fears that poison our respective outlooks on our society?

I was watching a documentary the other night on PBS about Reconstruction in the old South. For a brief moment in time, things improved for blacks in the South after the Civil War.  African-Americans were allowed to vote, and several were elected to political office, including the United States Senate. Battle of Bacon Booming

BY JOHN FEEHERY
reprinted from thefeeherytheory.com

An interesting story caught my eye in the New York Times today, about the rise of a radical right-wing group in, of all places, Sweden.

Swedes are concerned that they are losing their national character
because of the high influx of immigrants from Muslim countries.

Repeal the Infield Fly Rule

BY JOHN FEEHERY
reprinted from thefeeherytheory.com

The world is going to hell in a hand basket. The stock market just crashed as if Congress allowed the President to default on our debt
payments. Europe is in the same shape financially as it was in 1946.

So why am I focused on the Infield Fly Rule?

I don’t know. I thought it would be a pleasant diversion from the
negative news we see every day.

Scaring Seniors Backfires

BY JOHN FEEHERY
Reprinted from thefeeherytheory.com

The President turns 50 tomorrow, which is a big deal, especially to
the President’s fundraisers, who are doing their best to milk it for
all it is worth. Apparently, they are throwing a big bash for him in
my hometown of Chicago. My invitation must have got caught up in my spam filter.

50 isn’t nearly as old as it used to be (especially if you are 47,
like a blogger I know pretty well), and to many old-timers who depend on Social Security and Medicare to survive, 50 is pretty darn young.

Pelosi-Bachmann Axis, Party of No

BY JOHN FEEHERY

Reprinted from thefeeherytheory.com

Nancy Pelosi, the House minority leader, must be very happy with her colleague Michele Bachmann.

Bachmann (R-Minn.) has stated repeatedly that she will never vote to increase the debt limit. And her position is winning converts among some House Republicans, especially those who are worried about a primary challenge from the right.

Shared Sacrifice of Rich, Poor

BY JOHN FEEHERY

Reprinted from thefeeherytheory.com

In the context of the debt limit, Democrats have been pushing for tax increases because they want to punish the rich. They believe that because the so-called rich pay only 80 percent of the tax burden that they should be forced to pay more.

In their view, the only way to really inflict shared sacrifice is through the tax code.

The problem with that assumption is that it isn’t true. There are plenty of ways to include rich people in the shared sacrifice without raising taxes one dime.

Obama Reality: Conventional President

BY JOHN FEEHERY

Reprinted from the feeherytheory.com

President Obama emailed his supporters that he is running for re-election. I guess he did that as a way to tell young voters (who largely powered his initial election campaign) that he is still with them.

Sunset Every Law

BY JOHN FEEHERY

Reprinted from the feeherytheory.com

As anybody who ever watched Schoolhouse Rock in the 1970’s knows (“I am just a bill, I am only a bill and I am sitting here on Capitol Hill, but I hope to be a law one day, oh, yes I know that I will, but today I am still just a bill”), it is awfully hard to make a law in this country.

Nothing Small About Spending Cuts

BY JOHN FEEHERY

Reprinted from the feeherytheory.com

It is easy to be fairly nonchalant about the current budget battle that has consumed the Congress.

Pundits (myself included) have pointed out that the tens of billions of dollars being discussed is chump change, especially if you consider the trillions of dollars that we owe to the Chinese.
